Abstract

Discoveries in solar physics made during the SMM-SMY-SMA period are highlighted, with special reference to impulsive energy release in solar flares. Major discoveries include observational evidence for magnetic reconnection and its theoretical interpretation, chromospheric evaporation to explain the simultaneous blue shift of X-ray lines and red shift of Hα, simultaneous production of high energy (Mev) electrons and protons, and their acceleration by Fermi shock acceleration upto 100 Mev energies, and evidence for a new acceleration process to explain the electron deficient very hard ion spectrum ( > 1000 Mev) in the extended emission phase of the large 1982 June 3 flare.
