Abstract

Interest in membrane filtration in the sugarindustry is increasing. Sugar, as the final prod-uct of technology of sugar production, has tosatisfy rigorous quality demands. Among others,it means low content of non-sucrose com-pounds, as well as the smallest possible share ofcolored matter. One of the classical operationsof non-sucrose compounds separation is theirsedimentation by calcium oxide and carbondioxide, added to the sugar solution. Althoughthe traditional method removes about 35% ofnon-sucrose compounds, it causes pollution ofthe environment [1]. Therefore, the possibilityof applying other separation techniques, such asmembrane separation, has been investigatedvery intensively [2,3,4]. The aim of this researchwas to study the ultrafiltration (UF) perfor-mance in improving the thin sugar beet juicecharacteristics and its ability for separation ofcolored matter and other non-sucrose compoundunder different operation conditions.
