Abstract

1. After implantation with N+ and C+ ions, a hardened zone up to 300 μm thick, which consists of the implanted and heterogeneous layers, is formed on the surface of steel ShKh15. 2. The wear resistance of steel ShKh15 specimens is significantly increased after ion implantation, and is raised to the highest degree after implantation with nitrogen ions. 3. Redistribution of chromium and iron in implanted specimens is associated with chemical interaction between the implanted ions and the matrix components, which is accompanied by the formation of carbides and nitrides.
