Abstract

Mechanical seals in ethylene oxide service can sometimes fail within a very short time, often with severe damage to perfluoroelastomer secondary seals that would normally be expected to give long service. This feature provides an insight into the problems and solutions for mechanical seal design, material specification, and system commissioning to ensure robust and effective sealing of this potentially hazardous media.
