Abstract

One of Europe's most valuable resources, its outstanding research in the life sciences, will be made a star on the socioeconomic stage. The European Commission's (EC) recognition of the tremendous potential of biotechnology to improve human lives and the economy radiates from the consultation document Towards a Strategic Vision of Life Sciences and Biotechnology.1 “To become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world…”, the European Union, via the EC, is endeavouring to create the climate of regulation and social acceptance in which technologies can thrive.
