Abstract

Study Objective: Using electronic emergency department (ED) medical records is a promising method of detecting emerging infectious disease outbreaks and bioterrorism events. We sought to answer the question: which combination of variables and case definitions are most effective surveillance tools? We used 5 years of accumulated electronic ED visit data to explore the best methods for setting syndrome surveillance case definitions using seasonal meningoencephalitis (MEE) as a model.
