Abstract

Global food production currently uses just under 50 % of the 10 Gha of land surface area of the planet capable of supporting productive biomass, i.e., excluding deserts, tundra, and mountains. This is to support just one species – humans, and our pets, leaving just over 50 % to support all other land-based species. More food will be needed to support the forecast growth in global population to 2050, in a sustainable manner. Clearly, we need to find ways of expanding the amount of available food with minimal increase in cultivated land. This can be achieved by global efforts to (i) reduce food loss and waste as well as (ii) increase the sustainable intensification of agriculture.
