This is a qualitative study with an exploratory scope since it wanted to examine a little-studied research topic on the teaching and learning of English. Its objective was to establish the relationship between the TPR (Total Physical Response) method and motivational and metacognitive development in seventh grade students in the English area from three basic education institutions in the rural and urban sectors in Colombia. With the particularity that all the students participating in the study stated that they had had unpleasant experiences with English in their academic environments. For this, an intentional non-probabilistic sample was used, since in these groups there was evidence of greater difficulty in using and learning the second language, greater fear when expressing themselves orally and interacting with others. A survey was applied to this population as an instrument, through which it was possible to know the effectiveness of the TPR method for meaningful learning of English. As analysis methodology, description and comparison were used. An Excel matrix was produced; structured, categorized and detailed with specific objectives, categories, subcategories and finds, which showed how to compare and analyze each data obtained and thus see the results clearly. In conclusion, it can be stated that the results showed that the method raised interest and motivation, pursuing a significant learning of English, in an autonomous and self-regulated way, and at the same time facilitating the active participation of the student.

This study analyses how a teacher at SMPLB-CD YPAC (Foundation for Children with Disabilities), Banda Aceh, Indonesia, teaches English listening using the Total Physical Response (TPR) method to autistic students. In this method, a teacher instructed the students to act as modelled by the teacher. Students are considered to have good listening comprehension if they understood the teacher’s commands and imitated the act. This research is qualitative to describe the application of the TPR method in teaching English listening skills to autistic students. The sample for this study was four autistic students at the school under study. The data were collected by observing and documenting the English listening teaching-learning process in the classroom using the TPR method. The data were then analysed, focusing on the classroom dialogues directly related to using the TPR method to teach listening comprehension to autistic students. The results showed that the TPR method is suitable to teach students with autism to learn and understand new words. This was because they were asked to imitate the words verbally and in action repeatedly. The students could memorize the new vocabulary because it involved motor activities, which created a fun atmosphere in the classroom. Students were active in doing the actions and have no pressure to learn. The TPR method also contains elements of games which is able to raise a positive mood in autistic students.

  • Mislawi Adirasa + 2 more

The importance of English in this modern era does not guarantee that students have the motivation to learn English. Most students have low motivation to learn English. It also happened in SMP Ibrahimy 1 Sukorejo. According to the results of the study, the teachers used the lecture method in the learning process. Many students feel bored when learning because the method is less effective. So that many students do not have the motivation to learn English, the researcher used a classroom action research (CAR) approach. CAR consists of three cycles, each cycle consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The method used is the Total Physical Response method. The data collection technique used was the Observation Method, Interview Method, Documentation Method, and filling out questionnaires conducted by students. The data analysis technique used was the analysis of increasing motivation through the test again. Based on the learning trials conducted using the total physical response (TPR) method, it was obtained that students' motivation and learning achievement had increased. The increase in motivation to learn English through TPR method was quite large, wherein the Pre-cycle average grade of the class was only 60. In the first cycle 71, the second cycle 81, and the third cycle 92. Seen the results of the N-Gain test recapitulation between pre-cycle and Cycle I, it can be explained that there was an increase in the average N-Gain of 0.27 with low criteria. Furthermore, between cycle, I and cycle II the average increase in N-Gain were 0.31 with moderate criteria, and the last one was the recapitulation of N-Gain test results between cycle II and cycle III of 0.54 with moderate criteria
