Abstract
WHEN STUDENT WRITING is so poor that faculty from departments other than English begin to complain, reform is possible. At the University of Colorado, the time for reform came last year. The quality of student writing had declined so precipitously that faculty from all departments and schools were complaining. Their outrage provided the English Department with an occasion to press for revised entrance requirements and for curricular reform. Although the success of the English Department's actions has received national attention, the detailed work and occasional drama that led to success are worth reporting, because therein lies the real interest of a campaign that the Department was astonished to win.
