Abstract

Northern Ireland has a population of approximately 1.6 million people. Within the geographically small area there are many isolated rural communities. Since 1969, health and social services in Northern Ireland have been managed and delivered through an integrated health and social care system, unlike the rest of the United Kingdom (UK) where the two are administered separately. Health and social services are commissioned through four health and social service (HSS) boards, general practitioner (GP) fundholders and a number of pilot commissioning schemes, and services are provided through or by HSS trusts, voluntary agencies and the independent sector.
