Abstract

Zero-mode waveguides (ZMW) are nanoapertures milled in opaque metal films with subwavelength diameters. Thanks to their strong light confinement, ZMWs have been reported to enable single molecule detection in concentrated solutions of several micromolars with enhanced fluorescence brightness.
