Abstract

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Pediatrics has concluded that universal screening for anemia should be at approximately 1 year of age. Selective screening can be performed at any age when the risk factors for iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) have been identified. Many of our pediatric clinic patients have multiple known risk factors for ID and IDA (Mexican-American descent, low socioeconomic status, Medicaid insurance).
