Abstract

Abstract The University of Western Sydney, Macarthur (UWS, Macarthur) on the outskirts of Sydney, has recently implemented an initial teacher education program with in-school experiences designed to address criticisms of traditional practicum and so improve in-school experience for students undertaking a three-year teaching degree. This paper will outline the principles upon which an innovative final semester school-based experience is based, describe the experiences in practice, and report on student, tertiary supervisor, and supervising teacher evaluation of these experiences. The paper will also put forward conclusions as to what the UWS, Macarthur program has shown in terms of improving the practicum.
