Abstract

In order to sustain competitiveness, manufacturers are expected to strive for higher productivity and profitability without compromising on cost reduction. Competitiveness and higher productivity will consequently preserve more job employment and help meet short delivery times. Cutting tool manufacturers, with an aim to facilitate these targets, strive to demonstrate innovative features that could contribute to the reduction of cutting forces, distribute them more effectively, eliminate vibration and produce easy chip evacuation. Recent development and unique geometry features have contributed to high volume of metal removal with minimum energy consumption. Helical cutting edge geometry and variable-pitch flute patterns are only two examples for eliminating harmonic vibration while machining. In addition, large radius cutting edge configuration tends to axially direct the resultant cutting forces in axial direction towards the spindle. The tooling solutions, as presented in this paper, together with the strategy of dry cutting or MQL machining improve productivity tremendously, while ecologically protect the environment and reduce energy consumption.
