Abstract

Improved access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) coupled with better HIV awareness has resulted in a 52% reduction in new HIV infections and a 64% reduction in HIV-associated mortality since their peak in 1997 and 2004, respectively.1 HIV currently ranks as the 19th highest cause of global mortality after being ranked eighth in 2000.2
