Abstract

This study aims to find an improved nutrient formulation for culturing spirulina (Spirulina platensis) from the traditional formulation (Zarrouk). Experiments are applied in outside condition with simple transparent plastic cover combined with black camo netting. The first experiment tested the efficiency of 25% Zarrouk+ iodine formulation and the second experiment was applied fully Zarrourk formulation. The result shows that the first experiment reached 37.42 ± 3.881 cells/ml with total biomass approaches 643.3 ± 80.2 (g /0.5 m3). The second experiment reachs 43.422 ± 3.845 cells/ml with average biomass of ∼ 791.7 ± 52 (g/0,5 m3) with (P-value < 0,05). In conclusion, the improved nutrient formulation with original 25% Zarrouk adding iodine which contributes to improve Spirulina culture effectiveness in economic aspect which decreases expenses up to 75% as compared to Zarrourk
