Abstract

To comply with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) revalidation from April 2016, nurses must undertake 35 hours of continuing professional development, of which at least 20 hours must involve participatory learning with at least one other professional. This could be challenging for some nurses as they may experience difficulty being released from clinical areas to attend courses, conferences and mandatory training. This article describes simple, innovative nurse education programmes, structured around interactive, participatory ward-based learning, introduced into a busy cardiac unit. The education programmes necessitated collaborative working between ward/unit managers, specialist/advanced nurse practitioners, the clinical educator and ward nurses. The simplicity and favourable outcomes of the initiatives are worthy of dissemination.
