Abstract

This paper studies possible physical layer enhancements to the Long Term Evolution (LTE) evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) system to improve its spectrum efficiency and service quality using channel bonding of wide band Radio Frequency (RF) transmission, non-orthogonal multiplexing, e.g., Layered Division Multiplexing (LDM), and larger Cyclic Prefix (CP) duration and cell size. Single Frequency Network (SFN) operation, transmitter spacing and co-existence of broadcasting, multicasting and unicasting are also investigated. Differences between traditional terrestrial digital TV and eMBMS are studied. New technologies adopted in the next generation Digital TeleVision (DTV) standard are also discussed.
