Abstract
ABSTRACT Pauses are often thought to detract from fluency in French when spoken by foreigners. However, proper pause behavior, if modeled after that of educated native speakers, is actually a definite mark of authentic‐sounding and well‐controlled speech. This article reviews the different categories of native pauses and suggests techniques for incorporating them cautiously into the spoken French of anglophones, especially Americans.
