Improving documentation of oral chemotherapy doses in a pediatric oncology clinic

Abstract

Background: Home-administered oral chemotherapy is the backbone of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) therapy. Daily administration is required for 1.5 to 2.5 years in the maintenance phase of this therapy, where decreased adherence negatively impacts survival. Therefore, optimal communication of appropriate dose is required for parents, patients, and providers. In the oncology clinic, the doses of these medications are documented in the note, treatment plan, and medication list to facilitate such chemotherapy.
