Abstract

In 2013 the British Psychological Society produced a stepped-care model for the psychosocial treatment of behaviour that challenges (BPS; Brechin et al., 2013). This paper describes how two neighbouring mental health trusts in the North East of England have used the stepped-care approach in inpatient and care home settings, placing specific emphasis on the use of evidence-based communication skills. In this article we introduce two complementary teaching programmes, CAIT and PAC™, which provide practical skills for de-escalating problematic situations and improving the wellbeing of people with dementia.
