Abstract
In this issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Brescia and colleagues1 performed an economic assessment of mitral valve reconstruction performed at a mitral reference center. In their analysis, they compared the costs of mitral valve repair for locally treated patients with those of patients who had traveled to their center for surgery. Charges, professional fees, and payments from hospital systems were used along with US Medicare estimates. Based on these data, they determined an economic benefit for patients, payer, and consequently, society (sum of patients and payer benefit).
