Abstract

In February 2014, DVB approved the DVB-S2X specification that extends the DVB-S2 capabilities and increase its efficiency by around 20-30% to a maximum of 50% in certain applications. This paper analyses the new physical layer technologies incorporated in DVB-S2: new constellations, new roll-off factors, additional linear modcods (modulator-coders) and FEC granularity; as well as the new application layer techniques such as the promising channel bonding and superframe structure. The analysis will be done for the specific business cases of professional (DSNG - digital satellite news gathering) and direct-to-home (DTH) services, identifying the best way to exploit the capabilities of DVBS2X for each scenario. Finally, the paper will present a real case study of DVB-S2X implementation for live video contribution via satellite for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Real performance will be presented as the result of multifeed (World Cup sites) network design using the AMZ-1 satellite. The results of the analysis will foster an understanding of DVB-S2X capabilities based on results from the field.
