Abstract

ZnO varistors with high energy absorption capability and aging stability were fabricated. The main prescriptions of ZnO varistors include 94.09mol%ZnO, 1.0mol%Bi2O3, 0.75mol%MnO2, 1.0mol%Co2O3, 0.5mol%Cr2O3, 1.0mo.%Sb2O3, 1.2mol%SiO2, 0.1mol%Al2O3, and 0.36mol%Ga2O3. The varistors maintained a large voltage gradient and a high nonlinearity. AC accelerated aging test performed under 0.9U1mA at 115°C with 1000h showed that the ZnO varistors were stable. The varistors without being aged were in good condition after being struck 18 times by a 400A square wave energy pulse. The absorption energy was more than 327J/cm3 and the degradation rate coefficient (Kt) was 0.04. These values are suitable for manufacturing 1000kV ultra-high voltage surge arresters.
