Abstract

In an effort to increase competition and eliminate academic patronage, the Ministry of Science and Technology in Spain has established a fellowship program named after Santiago Ramon y Cajal, the Nobel-prize winning neuroscientist. Two thousand Cajal postdocs will receive five-year contracts, more than a 50% increase in salary and research independence. Universities and centers wishing to join the program must prove their commitment to offering permanent positions to individuals after completion of the fellowship. L.O.
