Abstract

Summary form only given.Ultraviolet (UV) lasers have been in demand for various industrial and medical applications. ReCa/sub 4/O(BO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ (Re:rare-earth ion) is one of the attractive nonlinear optical borate crystals. Recently we have developed Gd/sub x/Y/sub 1-x/Ca/sub 4/O(BO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ (GdYCOB) to achieve noncritical phase-matching (NCPM) condition for third-harmonic generation (THG) of Nd:YAG laser. however, in THG operation, the performance was limited by two types of photoinduced damages. It was found that one is gray-track, the other is photorefractive damage. In this paper, suppression of the photo-induced damages and the origin of gray-track are reported.
