Abstract

The understanding and the development of pulse tube refrigeration have been progressively advanced, and the lowest temperature obtained by the three-stage pulse tube refrigerator has reached below 4K. This chapter constructs a two stage pulse tube refrigerator equipped with three rotary valves. It investigates the performance of the refrigerator by changing the operational conditions as well as the sizes and the materials of the second regenerator. The lowest temperature of the second stage remained rather high than that of 15.6 K obtained by the more simple system. As the phase angle of the pressure wave of the gas passing through the hot end of the first and second pulse tube can be changed independently, their phase angle dependence of the lowest temperature is mainly investigated. The amount of the gas passing through the valve is controlled by orifice valve to find the optimum condition.
