Abstract
To suppress thermally grown oxides (TGO) in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), the effect of pre-oxidation treatment was investigated for different thermal spray processes, such as high-velocity oxy-fuel spraying (HVOF) and low-pressure plasma spray (LPPS). A pre-oxidation treatment was applied before or after the top coat processing. When the pre-oxidation treatment was applied before top coat processing, TGO growth was suppressed during isothermal oxidation compared to when pre-oxidation was applied after the top coat process. Thermal spray processing did not affect the TGO growth behavior.
