Abstract

Plasma-sprayed zinc oxide reinforced hydroxyapatite (HA-ZnO) coatings are developed on Ti13Nb13Zr (Titanium) alloy at three levels (4, 8, and 12%) of weight percent (wt%) of ZnO powder to improve the mechanical properties as well as the corrosion resistance. On increasing ZnO reinforcement, the results reveal that the hardness of the surface increases while the surface roughness of the samples continues to fall. The bare Ti13Nb13Zr alloy shows the hydrophobic behavior, however, all the coated samples are hydrophilic and result in a boost to clinical performance. The titanium substrate coated with HA+12% ZnO has the highest corrosion resistance among all the samples.
