Abstract

Fine milling of AO-TD produces substantial changes in the surface properties of the particles. As a result of mechanochemical activation in a ball mill or vibromill, the AO-TD particles acquire the capability for forming plastic and well-molded masses, so that mechanically strong granulated aluminum oxide can be obtained, eliminating the peptization stage. The milled product, upon peptization in an autoclave, forms a large quantity of pseudoboehmite, and the activated aluminum oxide obtained upon calcining this product acquires additional mechanical strength. Mechanical pretreatment of AO-TD offers a means for controlling the AAO properties and improving the manufacturing technology.
