Abstract

The concept of Renewable energy generation in recent era has gained more importance and the most viable source in the field of renewable power generation is wind energy. Various power quality problems arise due to the rapid injection of wind power in the electrical grid. Harmonics and various power quality problems like voltage sag and swell are of common occurrence due to the voltage injected by the wind generators in the electrical grid.. These lead to severe problems such as system frequency oscillations and change in power line capability. To minimize these problems a distributed static compensator (DSTATCOM) with appropriate control is used. Here DFIG based wind generator model is considered to be operating in islanding mode. The control technique used is Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) based control. The PI controller gains are optimized using PSO. The DFIG based wind turbine is attached with linear and nonlinear loads for constant wind speed and the harmonics are noted. Then the model is simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK. It is seen that introduction of optimized- DSTATCOM proves really effective to minimize the harmonics injected in the system.
