Abstract

Abstract A one-generation selection programme for ornamental shrubs is being introduced in Norway. Half-sib families were obtained from selected mother plants of Amelanchier spicata (Lam.) K. Koch, Berberis thunbergii DC and Cotoneaster lucidus Schlecht. The mother plants varied greatly in reproductive capacity and subsequently in the percentage of saleable offspring plants. The offspring families also showed great variation for height, ornamental value and bush-shape. Some mother plants combined a high reproductive capacity with offspring outstanding in ornamental value. Selections were made within each species.
