Abstract

The strengthening effects of micro Mo, Zr, La and Ce addition and short-time artificial aging (STAA) on mechanical properties of high pressure die-casting (HPDC) Al-Si-Mg-Zn alloy were investigated. The additions of Mo, Zr, La and Ce induced the formation of nanoscale phases in rapid solidification of HPDC. After the STAA, the supersaturated α-Al matrix solidified rapidly resulted in the fast and adequate precipitation of nano β'-Mg2Si phases. The combination of nano-phases containing the micro elements and nano β'-Mg2Si precipitates improved hardness and yield strength of the Al-Si-Mg-Zn cast alloy.
