Abstract

Maggots are the larvae of Black Soldier Flies (BSF) that consume organic waste and offer various benefits, one of which is using dried maggots as livestock feed, such as poultry and fish. Currently, maggots are dried using manual methods involving stoves and kettles, microwaves, and rotary maggot drying machines. However, each of these three methods has its own shortcomings. There is a need for the redesign of an effective and efficient maggot drying machine that produces high-quality maggots. The designed maggot drying machine combines principles of both rotary and oven drying. The redesign process of this maggot drying machine follows the Verein Deutsche Ingenieure (VDI) 2222 methodology. The research sequence includes problem formulation, literature review, data collection, improvement concepts, machine design, cost calculations, and analysis, which involves comparison with the previous machine, durability testing, and machine maintenance. The machine design utilizes the rotary principle to ensure even drying, while the oven principle allows for temperature control to obtain good-quality maggots that meet the needs of maggot enthusiasts.
