Abstract

This paper describes a new loading cam that always applies the optimum loading force to the variator used in a toroidal continuously variable transmission (CVT). The hysteresis of the loading force is shown to be caused by the spinning loss of the cylindrical cam roller of the conventional loading cam. This hysteresis is greatly reduced in the new loading cam by using a tapered cam roller that is free of spinning loss. Reducing the hysteresis lowers the average loading force, enabling the new loading cam to improve the torque capacity of a CYT.
