Abstract

Background Currently, the problem of water bodies pollution by sewage from industrial enterprises is rather urgent. Substances present in the effluent of petrochemical and oil refineries, in particular petroleum products, aromatic and polyaromatic compounds, heavy metals, have a very negative impact on the natural ecosystems of water bodies. The most promising and environmentally friendly method of wastewater treatment today is biological treatment. Aims and Objectives Analysis and evaluation of the effectiveness of the wastewater treatment process at biological treatment plants (BTP) of Bashneft Ufaneftekhim, a branch of PJSC ANK Bashneft, before and after the introduction of innovative treatment technology using a membrane bioreactor (MBR). Methods Sewage samples were taken in accordance with State Standard 31861-2012. Studies were performed by standard methods in an accredited laboratory. The objects of study were the wastewater entering the treatment, and treated wastewater after the BTP. The studied periods were selected for 2016 (before implementation) and 2018 (after implementation) years. Results The paper presents the characteristics of the previously existing and introduced technologies, their advantages and disadvantages. The qualitative and quantitative characteristics of wastewater entering the treatment are given. An analysis was made of the content in the wastewater before and after the introduction of the system with MBR of the following substances: ammonium ion, BOD complete, COD, volatile phenols, petroleum products, iron. The analysis showed that this modernization has significantly reduced the content of hazardous pollutants in the treated effluent, bringing their values to the level of the MPC. Thus, the modernization and widespread introduction of MBR systems at the wastewater treatment facilities of petrochemical enterprises will in the near future meet all standards and requirements of environmental legislation.
