Abstract

Ag–Mn alloy sheathed Bi-2223 superconducting tapes were prepared by Powder-In-Tube (PIT) method, and then fine-structured nickel (Ni) coatings were electrodeposited from a sulfamate-based electrolyte onto Bi-2223 tapes with different thicknesses. The mechanical properties and superconducting properties of 37 filament, Ag–Mn alloy sheathed Bi-2223 high temperature superconductor (HTS) tapes reinforced by electrodeposited Ni coating were investigated. The tape tensile strength and the tolerance of the superconducting critical current (Ic) to axial strains increased with increasing the thickness of Ni coatings. The reinforced Bi-2223 tapes showed a higher mechanical strength compared with that without reinforcement.
