Abstract

The present paper has the objective, by a suitable choice of parameters, to optimize the contact stress of WN gears with parallel axes. For this purpose a new idea is proposed by which the contact area can be maximized under the same total loading. This principle can be generalized for gears with skew axes; furthermore by reference to the results of photoelastic measurements and analytical researches conventionally made, it will be concluded that the new mechanism introduced here will be able to increase load carrying capacity: optimizing the difference in profile radii enables us to minimize the variation of location of contact point, thus root stress can be lessened in parallel with contact stress, provided that tooth forms near the pitch circles can be modified so as to have enough root strength.
