Abstract

The influence of Zr on high temperature oxidation resistance for Nb-Si-Ti based alloys has been investigated. Results show that the Zr-containing alloys exhibit an improved oxidation resistance, with reduced weight gain and decreased parabolic oxidation rate constant. In particular, the presence of Zr has suppressed the unwanted transition from parabolic to linear oxidation kinetics, therefore retaining fully parabolic oxidation kinetics. It is then demonstrated that the refined microstructure induced by the presence of Zr and the resulting continuous glassy SiO2 layer upon oxidation could be responsible for the improved oxidation resistance.
