Abstract
(Fe 0.80 Ga 0.15 Al 0.05 ) 99 X 0.5 C 0.5 (X = Zr, Nb and Mo) alloys with high strength (>800 MPa) and high magnetostriction (>100 ppm) were developed by means of the formation of fine carbide precipitation of intermetallic compound, as well as grain refining by carbide phases, XC, which have an inhibitory effect on crystal grain growth. The fracture mode differed from that in binary FeGa alloy as a result of the presence of a transgranular phase caused by the XC.
