Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the potential of marble dust to enhance the strength of soils for possible use as a subgrade material. Two different types of soils are amended with varying marble dust (MD) content (0–100%) in order to examine its effectiveness in improving the subgrade properties (i.e. strength and stiffness). The subgrade properties of sandy soil (SS) and black cotton soil (BCS) are evaluated by performing California bearing ratio (CBR) test for both unsoaked and soaked conditions. The results revealed that an addition of MD pronounces a detrimental effect on CBR value of sand for both unsoaked and soaked conditions, despite of its marginal increase at 25% MD. However, CBR values of BCS improve drastically up to 60% MD, and hence, 60% MD can be considered as an optimum MD content. It is revealed from comparative study that the influence of MD seems to be more effective with BCS in improving the subgrade properties as compared to the same with the SS. The CBR values of SS-25% MD and BCS-60% MD mixes for both unsoaked and soaked conditions also meet the Indian Road Congress guideline for subgrade preparation. Further, physicochemical properties (pH and electrical conductivity) are examined to understand the ionic reactions between soils and MD.
