Abstract

The effect of whitecap coverage on the apparent microwave brightness temperature of the sea, which varies with radiometer wavelength, polarization, and viewing angle (Webster et al, 1976), will be made use of in the interpretation of the data from the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) to provide an estimate of near surface wind speed. For this application, it is necessary to have an explicit expression for the dependence of 10 m- elevation wind speed, U, upon oceanic whitecap coverage, W.
