Abstract

The application of semiconductor switches as an alternative to valve technology, such as the thyratron, is reviewed. The symmetrical GTO thyristor is shown to be an available semiconductor switch, suitable for many existing pulsed power applications. The further optimisation of the thyristor as a pulsed power switch is explored and the limitation of some ancillary components such as anti-parallel diodes, in the further development of semiconductors as pulsed power switches is discussed.
