Abstract

Rationale: Recently, a new model has been proposed to assess hydration in patients by measurement of total body electrical resistance (TBER), with results expressed in Ohms rather than in liters body water [1]. According to this approach, hydration is considered to be normal if the actually measured TBER is within the predicted, patient-specific, normal range (TBERnorm). The latter can be calculated, based on the inverse linear relation that exists between TBER and the upper arm muscle cross sectional area (AMA) as assessed by anthropometry. The aim of this study was to investigate whether prediction of TBERnorm based on AMA can be improved by ultrasound (US)-based parameters of muscularity.
