Abstract

The oxidation behaviour of high entropy carbonitrides (HECNs) is reported for the first time. The oxidation behaviour of (Zr-Nb-Hf-Ta)CxN1–x (HECxN1–x, x = 1.0, 0.9, 0.8, and 0.7) powders and ceramics and mononitrides powders was investigated from RT–1200 °C using TG-DSC analysis. The oxidation onset temperature (OOT) of the HECxN1–x samples increased with increasing nitrogen content. The HEC0.7N0.3 powders had higher OOT compared to the monocarbides and mononitrides powders. The HEC0.7N0.3 ceramic had an intact structure after oxidation, while the HEC ceramic cracked, suggesting that the HECNs ceramics have better structural stability, which may be related to the high entropy effect.
