Abstract

High-concentration Er/sup 3+//Yb/sup 3+/ codoped glass waveguide amplifiers are analyzed by means of a finite-element-based code. Efficient Yb/sup 3+/ to Er/sup 3+/ energy transfer is shown to be a useful mechanism to reduce performance degradation due to Er/sup 3+/ ion-ion interactions. Numerical calculations based on realistic waveguide parameters demonstrate the possibility of achieving high gain with a short device length. >
