Abstract

A solution for determining the stress-intensity factor of two symmetric cracks emanating from the edge of an elliptical hole in an infinite plate is proposed. A finite-width correction factor is further established to take into account the finite-width influence in a finite plate. Results obtained by using the proposed method are in good agreement with published data for both infinite and finite plates containing a circular or an elliptical hole by the body-force and boundary-collocation methods and are also in good agreement with finite element results. Existing methods and formulae for the problem are also critically evaluated in view of small-crack application, and some limitations are highlighted.
