Abstract
This study examined whether guidelines for treating pneumonia improve clinical outcomes. Sixteen Intermountain Healthcare hospitals in Utah utilizing treatment guidelines were compared with 19 others that did not, analyzing outcomes of mortality, readmission, and length of hospital stay over a 10-year period. Compliance rates were also looked at between hospitals that had implemented the guidelines. Data were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. Mortality odds ratio (OR) at facilities following a guideline was 0.89 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.82–0.97; p = 0.007) compared to the other hospitals.
