Abstract

ABSTRACT BARK damage has been a serious problem when using trunk shakers to harvest young cherry trees. Excessive contact pressure or shear stress applied to the bark by the clamp pads can crush or split the bark. Bark damage can result in tree decline or death. A new clamp pad designed to avoid such damage by limiting contact pressure to low levels was constructed and orchard tested. It essentially eliminated bark damage, even on trees irrigated during the harvesting period. The new pad is now manufactured for one commercial shaker and its technical design is compatible with most other shakers.
