Abstract

An analytical procedure for improved characterization of distillation cuts of high and low temperature tars separated into polyaromatic hydrocarbons, basic and neutral nitrogen and hydroxylated polyaromatic compounds (H-PAH), has been described previously 1. Quantitative determination of the compounds in each class was performed by mass spectrometric analysis and capillary column gas chromatography. As an example the complete analysis of an anthracene oil was made and the results concerning the polyaromatic hydrocarbon fraction described. Analysis of this sample was performed and the results referring to basic and neutral nitrogen and hydroxylated polyaromatic fractions are reported here. At the end of this study, about 450 derivatives were detected and characterized by their retention indices calculated from a set of reference compounds adapted to each family.
